How the 900 phone numbers business scam works

The promoters of these 900 phone numbers business scams generally offer business ventures that consist of pay-per-call information or entertainment programs that consumers can access by calling 900 numbers. For a base price that varies from a few hundred to nearly $4,000, investors get a package that purportedly includes one or more 900-number lines, recordings of the programs and instructions consumers will hear when they call the lines, prepared advertisements and/or assistance in preparing and placing ads, and other technical support.

The promoters will generally make claims that investors will make a great deal of money, often suggesting the investors can expect earnings ranging from a few thousand to more than $200,000 a year.

In many cases that have went to court, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has charged that the earnings claims for the 900 phone numbers businesses were false, noting that few, if any, investors made the promised amounts. And in some cases, the FTC also charged that some marketers fail to pay its investors the agreed-upon portion of revenues from calls to the 900-number lines.

The biggest problem with the 900 phone numbers business

But probably the biggest problem with 900 phone numbers business opportunities these days is that consumers can legally decline to pay for a 900 number Call. Under FCC regulations, the phone company cannot disconnect a customer's regular local or long-distance service if they don't pay a 900 number charge. However, they could be blocked from making future calls to 900 phone numbers if they don't pay legitimate 900 number charges.

As you can imagine, this has led to a lot of legitimate 900 number calls not being paid for and making it much more difficult for legitimate 900 number operators to collect money owed to them (even if they hire a collection agency, often the cost of recovering money will exceed the amount of the money itself).

There's just too many headaches associated with a 900 Number Business.
