Internet Income Initiative & Google Pro Kit Complaints

When I first saw the complaints about a product called Internet Income Initiative (also called Google Pro Kit), I thought “wow, this really, really reminds me of the long and angry discussion going on right now about GoogleMoneyTree here. Of course instead of “Kevin Larsen” the product is by “Michelle Valdez”.

I went through the process for getting the Google Pro Kit and was bothered by the exact same thing that bothered me with GoogleMoneyTree. When I got to the part where I was supposed to enter my credit card, there was a pre-checked box stating “I Agree to The Terms and Conditions”.  What was interesting was that the phrase “Terms and Conditions” was hyperlinked to the actual Terms and Conditions, but on my computer I couldn’t even tell it was a link, although that may be an anomaly of how it displayed on my Mac iBook G4.

Anyhow, I went to read the terms and conditions. If I hadn’t already been talking to the people in the discussion about GoogleMoneyTree I would have been surprised by what I found.

There was quite a bit to read in the Terms & Conditions, but I was most interested if there were any other charges if I don’t cancel within the seven day trial period.

Here’s what the Internet Income Initiatve – Google Pro Kit Terms and Conditions said as of 12/27/2008:

“After seven days, if you choose not to cancel you will be billed your first monthly membership fee of seventy two dollars and twenty one cents for the membership fee for the internetincomeinitiative.com.”

First of all $72.21/Month for one month of online business training and tools (especially geared towards people new to online marketing) seems outrageously expensive (that’s $866.52 per year!).

Nothing we recommend on our top 10 recommended home businesses list comes anywhere NEAR to costing that much. Not even remotely close.

In fact as of today NO product recommended on the WorkAtHomeTruth sites comes close to costing as much as the full paid membership to InternetIncomeInitiative – a.k.a. Google Pro Kit.

As of December 27, 2008 2:00 A.M. Central Standard Time the Terms on the InternetIncomeInitiative site state:

“If you have a question or complaint regarding the Site, please send an e-mail to support@internetincomeinitiative.com. You may also contact us by writing to internetincomeinitiative.com, Website Customer Care, 5940 S. Rainbow Boulevard, Las Vegas, Nevada 89118, or but can only cancel by calling Customer Service at 888-657-8585.”

Click here to read the Terms at the InternetIncomeInitiative website.

If you signed up for InternetIncomeInitiative and were surprised by the charges that appeared on your statement, you may want to read the following information from the Federal Trade Commission:

Within the page called “Trial Offers: The Deal is In the Details” you’ll see the following

It’s The Law

According to the law, companies must clearly and prominently disclose the “material” terms of their trial offers before you give your consent. Material terms may include:

  • the fact that by accepting the trial offer, you’re actually agreeing to be enrolled in a membership, subscription or service contract or paying for additional products and services if you don’t cancel within the trial period;
  • how much time you have to cancel before you incur charges;
  • the cost or range of costs of goods or services you’ll receive if you don’t cancel during the trial period;
  • how to cancel during the trial period;
  • whether you’ll be charged a non-refundable membership fee if you don’t cancel within the trial period;
  • whether fees will be charged automatically to the credit card you used to buy other goods or services.”

So the question is what does “companies must clearly and prominently disclose” mean?

FTC has very good guidelines about proper disclosure placement as they relate to proximity and prominence here:

www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/ecommerce/bus41.pdf

I encourage you to read ALL the information above, but some of the relevant parts from the above PDF document are repeated below:

“Many of the general principles of advertising law apply to Internet ads, but new issues arise almost as fast as technology develops. This booklet describes the information businesses should consider as they develop online ads to ensure that they comply with the law. Briefly,

1. The same consumer protection laws that apply to commercial activities in other media apply online. The FTC Act’s prohibition on “unfair or deceptive acts or practices” encompasses Internet advertising, marketing and sales. In addition, many Commission rules and guides are not limited to any particular medium used to disseminate claims or advertising, and therefore, apply to online activi- ties.

2. Disclosures that are required to prevent an ad from being misleading, to ensure that consumers receive material information about the terms of a transaction or to further public policy goals, must be clear and conspicuous. In evaluating whether disclosures are likely to be clear and conspicuous in online ads, adver- tisers should consider the placement of the disclosure in an ad and its proximity to the relevant claim. Additional considerations include: the prominence of the disclosure; whether items in other parts of the ad distract attention from the disclosure; whether the ad is so lengthy that the disclosure needs to be repeated; whether disclosures in audio messages are presented in an adequate volume and cadence and visual disclosures appear for a sufficient duration; and, whether the language of the disclosure is understandable to the intended audience.

3. To make a disclosure clear and conspicuous, advertisers should:

  • Place disclosures near, and when possible, on the same screen as the trigger- ing claim.
  • Use text or visual cues to encourage consumers to scroll down a Web page when it is necessary to view a disclosure.
  • When using hyperlinks to lead to disclosures
  • make the link obvious;
  • label the hyperlink appropriately to convey the importance, nature and relevance of the information it leads to;
  • use hyperlink styles consistently so that consumers know when a link is available;
  • place the hyperlink near relevant information and make it noticeable;
  • take consumers directly to the disclosure on the click-through page;
  • assess the effectiveness of the hyperlink by monitoring click-through rates and make changes accordingly.
  • Recognize and respond to any technological limitations or unique character- istics of high tech methods of making disclosures, such as frames or pop-ups.
  • Display disclosures prior to purchase, but recognize that placement limited only to the order page may not always work.
  • Creatively incorporate disclosures in banner ads or disclose them clearly and conspicuously on the page the banner ad links to.
  • Prominently display disclosures so they are noticeable to consumers, and evaluate the size, color and graphic treatment of the disclosure in relation to other parts of the Web page.
  • Review the entire ad to ensure that other elements—text, graphics, hyperlinks or sound—do not distract consumers’ attention from the disclo- sure.
  • Repeat disclosures, as needed, on lengthy Web sites and in connection with repeated claims.
  • Use audio disclosures when making audio claims, and present them in a volume and cadence so that consumers can hear and understand them.
  • Display visual disclosures for a duration sufficient for consumers to notice, read and understand them.
  • Use clear language and syntax so that consumers understand the disclosures.

Once again, I’d recommend you read through the entire disclosure guide if you want more details.

    please know that this is a major rip off. the terms are changed almost daily (just went back to read them only to find they have changed since i first seriously looked into them. nothing of the information they gave is true phone #, password, name etc. this all leads to a phone call from someone, telling you how they can only work with you if you are the calliber of person that is very seriously interested and can come up with an investment of at least $5,000. i will tell anyone that will even remotely hear me what a scam this is. google really needs to put a stop to using the name, i know that is the reason i first requested the “free” info.

  4. rebecca says:

    No one should ever believe in these scams. People are so desperate for money and nothing is free in this world. These scams annoy the crap out of me and it is also hard to believe that so many people would fall for them. These people are getting rich off of naive or desperate people.

  5. Alan says:

    It happened to me also I never received anything not even on the internet .I was expecting a package in the male fore my 3.99 fee. that was taken from my Visa . Then when I saw on my Visa report that 72.21Us was taken I called my bank . I got my 3,99 back but i lost my 72.21 Us Which at the time was over 92.00 Can Bam gone like that I didn’t even know what hit me . Now I do read my terms and conditions much more closely than ever but many of these things are hidden . So that was a very expensive lesson . I’m retired and on a fixed income and believe me that was a lot of money for me . i’m still looking for something inexpensive so I can make money instead of loose all the time ???

  6. Jerry Durham says:

    Today I woke up and had had enough. I started calling google tree, I MEAN I STARTED CALLING! If they said something I didn’t like I’d hang-up and call again. For about 4 hours I called and called (I’m disabled so I just sit here anyway) I didn’t Stop. They started getting $issed. Finally the owner called me and threatened me with a law suit. After chewing him out I asked if liked stealing money from people, he told me “YES if we were stupid enough to answer his add then we needed to lose our money” My advice is to CALL AND KEEP CALLING. Every minute during hours hang-up and call again don’tr stop don’t slow down do all day start a movement if you will just keep Calling. Drive these scum out of business. Find a web site to meet and just go postal on these #astards!

    What a damn ripoff!!! They’ve obviously all repeated their “scripts” a million times…first to “suck us in” and have us agree to pay the small amount for the CD, the second for when we call to demand our $72.00 back and cancel. It’s crazy making! What a scam! I KNOW I only agreed to receive the CD. I had 7 days, (so they said)to cancel…on the 2nd day after receiving the CD some robotish type fellow called. I tried to cancel then, only to find out I had already been billed $72.00, which he said was (of course) non-refundable! There has got to be a way to bring these rip-off artists down! We deserve our money back!

    You people are all stupid. You are NOT going to get rich by sending money to some asshole spammer!

  15. jake says:

    Google Pro Kit program has nothing to do with Google. The owner of this money making program just name it to make it interesting. The Google Pro Kit also called Internet Income Pro Kit.
    Firstly they don’t send the kit. A lot of people have complained about this. Secondly, they will charge you $72.21 after seven day and you will probably not aware of it. This is the terrible part.
    When you sign up for the free kit to mail to your address, you will also be entered into a free seven days trial membership which will charge $72.21 to your credit card after 7 days. The visitors have complained that nothing about the $72.21 membership fee was mentioned during the sign up process.

    But in the Google Pro Kit sign up page, they do placed a ‘Term & Conditions’ link at the bottom. The Term & Conditions page has loads of content and in a section of the content, they do have described about the $72.21 membership fee and clearly stated that it is not refundable after charged. (Have your Bank try)

    So, this is how they trick people. You wouldn’t know exactly what you are actually signing up for unless only if you click the Term & Conditions link that ‘hide’ at the bottom of the sign up page and carefully read it.

    SUggestions:
    1) call the fraud department at your bank Bank of America 18009336262
    threaten to close your account if bank does not act to retrieve your $72.21, they will try and can refund your money…get mad and act
    2.) e-mail the FBI at http://www.IC3.gov and complaint. cut-n-paste parts of the letters above
    3.) e-mail the Attorney Generals of all 50 States (easy to get addresses,

    Yes, same thing happened! I never received a password, username or product. Was charged the $3.99 and the $72.21 but I was lucky the credit card company will refund me the $72.21. I despise these people, how do they sleep at night? I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and others to make them aware of this scam. I will be more diligent at researching what I get involved with now. I will also be notifying Google of how their name is being used fraudulently.

  18. Don Giguere says:

    Same with me. Scammed again?

  19. Peg says:

    The same thing happened to me. I cancelled my credit card and the credit card company is going after them. I did not authorize a credit card payment and I specifically said that on the phone, I only authorized the mailing fee. And it was my understanding the 7 day “FREE” trial was to commence when I received the package in the mail which I never did get by the way. So if you’ve had dealings with the company cancel your credit card you gave them and have a new one sent to you. In future get companies to email/fax an agreement to fax back authorizing payment from your credit card. And what happened to consumer protection??

  20. michael says:

    thanks for the information they just called me somehow and i had not even seen this site b4..and they insisted i pay the 3,99 fee, but i told them to call back in an hour, and than i found this site, and [edited] that im not giving them [edited] now. thanks for your help

    As of today’s date, February 8, 2009, I have placed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and the FTC/Federal Trade Commission. You should do the same, because the more of us that complain, the more solid the case against them. Many people walk away from this without doing anything, so they get away with it. I am also going to try and have this put on national television. This would really put a hurting on them, and Google itself. Obviously Google knows about this and condones it.

  22. larbear1955 says:

    Hello my fellow been riped off’ers!
    I jusr saw the $72 + charge on my CC card and had a S**t fit!. you can’t call these basterds and emails don’t go through.
    I’m in NJ as are you MRBOT and plan on filing a complaint with the state myself. These people must be stoped! True, in hard times any way to make money looks good. We should not be ashamed for what we did. THESE PEOPLE AND PEOPLE LIKE THEM SHOULD BE!! Good luck top all.

  23. Leland P. Riggs says:

    Call 1-888-657-8585 and you can get them to stop taking money from you. I’ve put in complaints with the FTC, The BBB, my State Attorney Generals Office, and a local Television Station to see if they will do a story on it. You should do the same things. If enough people complain, the Government will have to do some thing. I’m going after Google too. They know this stuff is happening, because they are using the Google name etc.

    I received my money back from Bank of America. I copied this entire site (seen above) and told them that I never received the product. You can get your money returned by doing the same, copy and send the above material to your credit card company or bank (fraud department). This material explains the scam and supports your case and reduces your writing task. Get your money back, regardless of the time it happened. All of us must act to stop this scamming on the internet, or all purchases on the net will become suspect.

  31. Judy says:

    I bought a DVD for free charging only 3.88 for shipping and handling. Ha! First of all the DVD was worthless, then a charge of 72.21 appeared on my bank statement. This is a major scam. I couldn’t afford to loose 72.21.

  32. Leland P. Riggs says:

    For what it’s worth folks! I got my money back!!!! After they took the $72.21 and $38.34 from me, I wrote them letters and told the myplan of action. Follow through is apparently the key, because I complained to the Better Bsiness Bureau, The Federal Tade Commision, myState Attorney Generals Office, The United States Post Office, and here on the Internet, plus I contacted a local TV Station, which did nothing.
    The point is, something worked, and they gave me my money back. Oh, if you paid with a Credt Card, you can complain to them too.
    Don’t give up! Good Luck!

  33. Leland P. Riggs says:

    I did get a refund, but I had to work for it. Put complaints with the BBB, The United States Post Office, your State Attorney Generals Office, and write them letters! It worked for me!

  34. Evelyn Holmes says:

    Get your money back! I did every things googlepro required of me for them to refund my money. When I called googlepro to get the status on my refund, the customer service told me I was not going to get my refund. I ask him why when I did get a cancellation number and did what was asked of me. He replied that they tell every one the same thing and told me I would not get a refund. Well, I reported them to everyone except the President of the United States:
    BBB,
    Ripoff
    Federal Trade Commission

    my bank
    and others
    and God
    I’m looking into a class action lawsuite, if interested email me.

  35. Leland P. Riggs says:

    Evelyn,
    what got me my refund was contacting my state attorney general’s office, and having them contact Internet initiative. This apparently scared them enough to give you my refund. They sent a letter to the Atty. Gen. stating there position, with a whole lot of lying and crap. However, they did refund my money. Don’t give up, putting the complaint to the Atty. Gen. of your state. Let me know how you make out.

  36. Tony A. Stroy says:

    I have a password and username. How do I get started
    My username: is googlepro, and a password I have.

  37. Leland P. Riggs says:

    You probably won’t get anywhere. Why are you posting here? I suggest that you call your bank and block Internet Initiative from your Account NOW! Don’t wait until they take out more money for nothing. Call the phone number and cancel the account with them also! Good Luck!

  38. Leland P. says:

    I’m in the process of getting my money back thru my bank. I just want to go a lot further with these scums. We need to put a stop to them. I want them of out business because they are crooks. And I’m still reporting them to every available agency. As-soon-as I get my refund, I,m going to call their customer service number every hour on the hour and maybe more telling them how evil they are. I’m going to be their nightmare. I have lots of time, I also am on disbilty. They have just made me a mad black women. Black, white, green, I would still be mad.

    No apology needed, and I must apologize to you if I made you feel I was criticizing you in any way. I tend to come off that way, and don’t mean to. My refund success came from my State Attorney Generals Office. I agree with you 1000% on the fact they are SCUM! We need to get someone on the Federal level involved. You are doing the right thing. I hope everyone follows through like you. Good luck.

    I ordered your program and i recieved the package almost nine days later, pretty good scam (cause the free trial is for 7 days only)so you automatically charged me $70.00 for something i did not use. When i tried to talk with one of the managers ,the customer service person told me they can not be reached. So i guess the internet is still the tool for robbing people.

  42. Daniel,

    What’s the antecedent to the possessive pronoun “your” in your comment?

    Do you realize that you’re on the WorkAtHomeTruth site which has NOTHING to do with the program you’re talking about?

DELL SAID THE HAD IN HOME SERIVCE IF YOU BOUGHT THE COMPUTER,, YEAH, FORGET THAT,, THEY TRY TO FIX COMPUTER OVER THE PHONE AND SCREW IT UP WORSE THAN IT WAS TO BEGIN WITH,, THE DELL TECHS (USED LOOSELY) SORRY, I MEAN THE DELL IDIOTS HAVE NO CLUE WHATS GOING ON,, I COMPAINED TO THE F.T.C. 3 TIMES,, THEY ARE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS TOO, I PAID $99.00 EXTRA FOR DELLS WARRANTY ONLY BECAUSE I KNEW NOTHIHG ABOUT THE COMPUTER AT THE TIME AND HAD TO HAVE MY FRIENDS FIX IT BECAUSE DELLS TECH SUCK, JUST LIKE THE F.T.C. SOOOOOO GOOD LUCK ON THE F.T.C. HELPING YOU,HEAVEN FORBID THAT THEY WOULD TRY.I FILED MY COMPLAINTS 2 YRS AGO, AND EVEN FOLLOWED UP ON IT,, GUESS WHAT? STILL NO ANSWER FROM THE F.T.C., WHY? BECAUSE DELL IS A BIG COMPANY AND WE ARE JUST A BUNCH OF NOBODYS TO THE F.T.C.
