Somehow during one of my searches for something else I ran across called SEOProblems.com.
The site was originally set up because the owner felt ripped off by a specific SEO company. But that’s not what interests me.
What interested me was the good job the site did in breaking down exactly how SEO companies prey on clients that don’t much about how the search engines work. I think somewhere on the site the owner compares many SEO companies to dishonest automechanics, but I couldn’t locate it again.

5/30/2009 update: Some great tips from SEO Expert John Barremore who specializes in Internet Dental marketing have disappeared due to a technical glitch. I’m posting some helpful advice from him here:
“I’m an SEO working within the dental/medical field. We offer a guarantee and we’ve never had an unhappy client.
Granted, there are as many ripoffs as there are legit SEOs; possibly twice as more. Still not every SEO service is a scam.
Here’s a short checklist for choosing an SEO:
- look for an SEO specialist in your particular industry niche
- ask the person or SEO company for references
- request to see current, or recent examples of their work
- determine ranking goals and a campaign strategy to get there
- establish keyword benchmark positions to gauge progres
- expect a flat-rate fee, or a single cost with a monthly payment option
- insist on a guarantee and only pay once your goals have been reached

Hi Paul,
Is this the quote that you could not find?
“Finding and selecting an SEO/SEM company is pretty much the same as trying to buy a used car from a dishonest dealership. You are at their mercy when it comes to the information they give you about the car you want to buy.”

Yep. That’s it.
Thanks, Liam.
