Are Fake News Sites the Next Gold Rush?
Another fake news site? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Are fake news sites the next big thing? If the alarming number of fake news sites with fake stories about fake blogs are any indication – the answer is a resounding yes! Most of the fake news sites talk about a fictitious woman named "Mary Steadman" who claims "I get paid about $25 for every link I post on Google and I get paid every week… I make around $5500 a month right now".
One thing that the fake news sites DO get right is that "Mary's story is a very familiar one in these tough times". That's true since there are over 1000 fake blogs perpetuating the myth that you can make big money "just by posting a link on google".

Some of the fake news sites do post disclaimers like "This publication is an article advertisement for Google Profit Kits", "This publication is an article advertisement for Easy Google Profit", or "This publication is an article advertisement for Google Biz Kit" (I noticed that many of those are now redirecting to a product called CashSecretClub).
But one of the stranger things about these fake news sites is that they have an "ADVERTISMENTS" section ON the advertisement itself and to my eye the word "ADVERTISEMENTS" on the right is quite a bit bigger than the advertising disclaimer on the top (note, not all sites have the disclaimer).
I haven't determine how many of the fake news sites are similar to the actual newspapers in that area. If anyone lives in one of the area that the following fake news sites claim to be from it would be interesting to know if they sound like a newspaper in your area. I am in total shock; I just purchased this google online business. I did notice, while I was setting up accounts and looking for websites to promote I didn’t see any major business, most of them were just home base companies, and when I went to search for other business to post to all I got was the same ones that they had already giving me. All the categories were the same businesses, meaning. Sports, Fun Entertainment, Internet Businesses, Computer Electronic, all the same posting listed. I was puzzled? That’s what made me re-check what I had read. So I googled the name Mary Stadman, and found all of this. Man !!! Are there any honest people out there? Is this what we have come too, this scam is huge. The article is appearing in every state and in the UK. Thank You, for your hard work and fast thinking I never would have been able to see this coming. And I am already hurting for money; I just couldn’t afford to loose the little I have. Thank You, Again for your work on exposing these frauds. Maybe the FCC already knows and they have so many people doing this it’s too big for them to handle.

The agencies that handle these kind of cases are just swamped right now AND understaffed AND underfunded which unfortunately makes it fertile ground for scammers.

There is NO real way to 'get rich quick' online.
99.98% of it is a rip-off scam!
Even when using Google AdWords along with Commission Junction or any other affiliate,
you'll still have to 'work your head off' and know exactly what to do..
..but those are still not guaranteed to make you tons of money or even enough money to survive.

It is very disappointing that the story is not true about Mary Steadman/Karen Steadman or whom ever this person is.
I firt saw the article pop up when I was checking emails from netscape. I was impressed because the links had sites that I considered to be reputable. Such as CNN, Good Morning America and so forth. I only found this blog after reading the small print that stated that I would be billed for additional charges for the google kit.

Today my mom and I were linked to this by a trusted friend, signed up, and only became suspicious after we tried to learn more about how exactly the "Google Profits" program worked. We can't even hope to reach a live person on the number we got from Google Profits till tomorrow, but in the meantime we tried to cancel the charge with our credit card company and were unsuccessful. What we WERE able to do, however, is suspend our card so that the scammers won't be able to put the charge through. However, we'll want to reactivate our card eventually, and we don't know if the scammers will continue to try and charge it after it bounces the first few times… hopefully we'll be able to reach them and cancel our charge, but if not, I guess the only other thing to do is cancel our card??!?!?! (Any advice on this is most welcome)

The reason I ask is because a common spamming technique is to forge email headers OR to hijack email accounts' contact lists and send out spam from that account.

@Paul: yes, actually, it was via Facebook – a family friend who we hadn't seen in a while "wrote" on my mom's wall. It sounded like something he'd actually say, and he happens to be one of maybe three people that my mom says she'd trust regarding this sort of thing (what are the odds?)… we found out later last night that his Facebook account had been hacked- I linked him to this article so he could share it with anyone else the hacker targeted. But the good news is my mom was actually able to reach the "Google Profits" people this morning and cancel the charges (to our knowledge, anyway).
I'm kind of curious about this, though. My mom said the person she talked to was actually very friendly and cooperative, and that the whole thing seemed COMPLETELY legitimate. Also, the website we were given, "googleprofitresearch.com", had information and tips that ALSO sounded legitimate. Is it just a cleverer scam than we thought, or is there actually some truth behind the whole thing?

Certainly there is truth in the idea that you can make money leveraging traffic from Google – either through buying advertising from their Adwords program or learning how to rank "organically".
That's what's discussed in the article mentioned at the top of this blog post:

The article discusses thousands of fake blogs claiming that you can "Make Money Posting Links on Google".
Yes, there's an "element" of truth to it, but that's what the best scams do. They take a piece of truth to make something seem credible, but leave out the important details.
It's a classic case of "lying by omission".
The problem with most of the Google "kit" type products being heavily promoted these days are the following:
1) Some of them don't disclose the monthly fees after the trial period (negative option) obviously enough (in my opinion, however, the FTC recently cracked down on many negative option offers). The one you're talking about may or may not fit that category – I can't say without seeing the exact site.
2) Often the training is out of date.
3) Many of them will hound you relentlessly by phone for additional services after you sign up.
I would certainly watch your credit card statement and make sure the charges actually get canceled.

I bought the Google portion of the package and read over some of the material. I don't know what prompted me to do a search about this, but something just didn't feel right about it. So I looked for Mary Steadman online and found a number of things that said this was a fake news website. ARGH! Now I have to cancel before they charge me $80.

That's funny. I found the site yesterday while clicking on a news article about UFO's on my home page. This Mary Steadman is said to live in Perry, MI, which is where I live. I tried to see if she was listed in our local phone book, which she was not, but people do have unlisted numbers. After I signed up, which I received emails from Alternative Funding, which was going to charge $29.95 per month after the 14-day trial and WebMoney Training (which I was into the 2nd page of instructions when I discovered it was a "pay per click"), I got curious and input Mary's name and found all this. My husband and I already have a website for automatic waterers for livestock with Richie Waterers and believe you me, we are NOT getting rich. We do make sales and have a drop ship agreement with a company who carries the product, but it's been slow going. We actually attended a 2 day seminar to learn how to do this and we do receive support. But it takes a long time to get going. I wonder who the real Mary Steadman is!? I guess we all need to be suspicious of these "too good to be true" stories.

This scam site does have an interesting wrinkle. It can determine your city and replace the city name with your city in the name of the "publication" and in the "story copy". I don't know really understand how they do it, but my IT guy says it's tied to your local IP address. IP addresses are assigned geographically and the web site substitutes "local" information in the appropriate places.

The latest and greatest is posting admin assistant jobs on Craigslist with local neighborhood details so they sound real. For example, I live in Hawaii, and the ad might include info like a specific street so you think, "well, I know where THAT is, must be a real company."
Then they send you links to crap like this, or to sites asking you to "take an employment survey" or "we need your credit check".

Google started banning people from advertising this kind of nonsense in their adwords program, but that doesn't seem to have slowed down the promulgation of them much at all.

You got to be amused when these sites just so happen to be in your local town. That to me is the dead give-away to look at he site's page source to find their handy little javascript snippet that gets your IP addy -where it finds all of your info. about where you live.You can also test it by looking at the site through a proxy server located in some other country like Japan. LOL! "Mike Richardson from Japan makes $3500 a week..blah…blah..
Try to post a reply on one of these sites…you can't!
Hell no – they don't want us savvy folks to post "This site is a scam…etc."

I just put an ad up, looking for work section in my local paper. I have recieved an overwhelming amount of BS responses! Fortunatly I received two of simular google ads. This is what put up the red flag for me…….E-mail 1…. From her website: "I get paid about $25 for every link I post on Google and I get paid every week… I make around $7340 a month right now working the Google Cash Secret Club "

Both stories go on the same, just different names & monthly incomes!
I put both names through Anywho engine & both names came from Clementon, NJ NOT Northfield. That's when I googled both web addresses and came to this site.
I'm VERY disturbed that these people are getting away with ripping off people who honestly need to work to pay thier bills!

The scary thing is right now the scams seem unstoppable. Law enforcement, including the FTC has been aggressively pursuing all kinds of scams, but the scammers seem to be relentless.
I still see new fake news sites promoting quesitonable products poppinng up weekly.

Been getting ones also to hire, but asking for all my info! BIG RED FLAG!!! The work wanted ad I posted, I stated that I had to sell my car to pay last months rent, yet I still got this!

It's just awful, I have had such a hard time finding work, figured I'd put up an ad "Looking for work" with all my experience. In hopes of a job to get my gas turned back on (I'm freezing here, boiling water on electric burner to bath with) about to loose the power, REALLY need a job! AND THIS IS ALL I'VE RECEIVED! I just Hope to God something comes around soon. I'm such a dedicated, hard working individual. In this economy today it's only getting harder to get work. For example, a janitorial job opened up at a local school here…. OVER 3,000 people showed up to apply for that ONE job! If I don't get a job soon to pay my bills, I don't know what I will endure.

3000 people for ONE job. Now that's a scary picture your painting. I've definitely have had many friends out of work for VERY long periods of time recently, but I think what you've posted is an important reality check.

Yes, I do. Problem is, it's the most seasonal city in the NE! Season here is from Memorial day till Labor day. So now hundreads to thousands of people are getting laid off for the winter! Even the casinos let a few hundread people go during this time of year. It's NUTS! With all the people that are out of work here, it's been even harder to get in anywhere for the summer in hopes of being a year round employee! Like I said OVER 3,000 people showed up for ONE job! If I had the $ to commute I'd head north to the City for work, that's 2 1/2 hours away though. I just really hope our country gets back on track sooner then later. I have a tent for camping, but I sure DON'T want to live in it! Especially since it snowed not to far from here recently, back to back Nor'easters! NOT ideal conditions for living in a tent!

What is the news coverage there like concerning the employment problems? I don't think I've ever had a picture painted for me by the mediea that's as startling as thinking of 3000 people showing up for one job the way you've described it here.

Migration may be the only temporary answer. If you have enough money to move on. It is very hard to leave somewhere that you have lived all of your life, but sometimes it is a necessary step to survive. I know that Wyoming is in need of many types of workers. It is not a great place to live. But there are jobs there.
