Connecting domains through I.P. history & reverse IP lookup

The following video shows how to connect domains by combining I.P. history look ups with Reverse-IP look ups:

The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Do a basic Whois look up

Basic Whois Lookup

Basic Whois Lookup

Step 2: Do an I.P. history lookup

IP History Lookup

IP History Lookup

In this example I just pick the previous I.P of the domain. Sometimes you need to go back through multiple I.P. changes.

Step 3: 20 other sites are hosted on the domains prior I.P.

Domain's prior I.P. is hosting 20 other sites

Domain's prior I.P. is hosting 20 other sites

Step 4: Results of the Reverse-IP look up on the domains previous I.P.

In this case, I’m interested in the two highlighted domains:

  • ProjectNewMillionaire .com
  • Rich16YearOld .com

I’m interested in these because of the research I’m doing here on Rich16YearOld.com

You’ll see in that write-up that other domains on the list are of interest as well, especially (so far):

  • AnonymChamp.info
  • BettingSystemsReviews .com
  • BloggersPayoff .com
  • DirtyInternetSecrets .com
  • MiconAffiliateNetwork .com
  • MiconSecrets .com
  • SportsPicksBuffet .com

Connecting websites through naming conventions

Often companies will name their products with the same or similar naming conventions. If the naming convention is unique enough it’s often possible to find possibly related sites through the use of:

  1. A domain search tool
  2. A class C I.P. block checker
  3. A reverse IP look up tool

I go over the steps in the above video, but here they are again:

  1. Use DomainTools domain search function
  2. Click on advanced search
  3. Enter words to search on
  4. Enter the maximum domain length to look for (I picked 35 in this case)
  5. Select with or without hyphens or both (I selected “without hyphens” in this case because I know the company doesn’t usually use hypens in their domain names)
  6. Get both active and deleted domains (for other purposes you might only want active ones)
  7. Click search to get the results
  8. Extract the search results using Web Data Parser (note: you will not get top level extensions (.com, .org, .net, etc)
  9. Use Web Data Parser to extract the domains only (remember, you don’t have the top level domain extensions at this point.
  10. Copy the list of domains
  11. Use KeywordMixer to add the top level extension to the domains (I added .com in this case)
  12. Copy the results (domains are now in “domain.com” format
  13. Paste the results of step 12 into a bulk class C IP checker
  14. Check the results of the bulk class C IP checker for any domains with the same I.P. (in this case I found 4 domains on IP 174.143.30.126
  15. Do a reverse-ip lookup on any IP you find in step 14 that has more than 1 domain hosted on it

Results of this example

In this example I found 224 domains on I.P. 174.143.30.126 – however, as you see in the video I was only looking for the bizop ones at this point.

The final list of bizop domains I generated from this process was:

Connecting websites using Ghostery as a starting point

The Firefox plugin Ghostery was developed to help people searching online understand what websites track about them and put them in control of their privacy. Ironically, the Ghostery plugin is also a goldmine when it comes to finding starting points for possible connections between websites.

From the Ghostery website:

“Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.”

You can see a screenshot of the popular website ReadWriteWeb that shows how Ghostery displays that information below:

Ghostery ReadWriteWeb

Ghostery ReadWriteWeb

Of course one you’ve determined the analytics and advertising platforms that a site is using, you can use tools like the ones discussed in this post about connecting potential website ownership through analytics and advertising code.

ReadWriteWeb.com actually isn’t the best type of site to to try to connect to other sites (larger sites often have exclusively used analytics IDs and advertising codes)…so, I took a look at the popular free online flash gaming site freeonlinegames.com:

Ghostery FreeOnlineGames.com

Ghostery FreeOnlineGames.com

For reverse-engineering purposes the point of using Ghostery this way is 2-fold:

  1. You see the what tracking a site is using as you browse alerting you to possible means of making connections between websites
  2. Based on the tracking codes the site is using you can determine what existing services you might be able to use to tie the sites together

The obvious tools to use in this case are any of the tools that track shared adsense and analytics code. In this case I used SpyOnWeb.com:

SpyOnWeb - FreeOnlineGames.com

SpyOnWeb - FreeOnlineGames.com

Obviously that’s just a partial screenshot of all the data that SpyOnWeb shows for FreeOnlineGames.com.

The other thing to keep in mind is that shared analytics ids do not prove that the sites are registered, controlled, or owned by the same person or company. The reason why is because some sites share advertising revenue so multiple adsense IDs controlled by various people will show up under the same site.

A couple of things you can do to ascertain whether it’s like the sites sharing adsense revenue are controlled by the same person or company are to:

  1. View the source code to see if the site is using multiple adsense codes
  2. Check whois for additional clues about the registrant (always keep in mind that whois information isn’t always accurate)
