A Constant State of Failure

Matt Levenhagen Blog Post (Reprinted with Permission):

I dumped about 6 campaigns these last few days. Some were just duds and wasting space (no clicks etc)… others I felt I had spent enough. One I had made a sale early, but then I spent twice the commission to try and make another!

Now in the next few days I will replace those 6 with 6 more… all different products and different markets.

Out of those 6 hopefully I’ll get one winner.

I’m in a constant state of failure. BUT the winners stick.  It’s kind of like a plant or tree I suppose. You water it. Watch it grow… but periodically you prune it… cut off some of the straglers & branches that don’t conform and let new buds imerge…

Maybe the new buds will work better or they’ll be chopped off during the next pruning and trimming…

—————-

I’m a salesman. I’ve been in sales for almost 15 years. I’ve sold all kinds of things over the years.

The product that will illustrate this best was when I was selling Life Insurance full time. Mortgage Life to be exact. I did very well at it, but I phased it out to pursue my online biz…

Life insurance…

I worked off of leads that were received from people that were interested in Mortgage insurance. The lead company I worked with would send out millions of forms people could fill out to get a quote.

Out of those millions they got about 1 or 2% back…

I would recieve 10-15 of those per week.

I would sit down at my phone and call those… some would pile up from weeks previous so I was always working on 30, 40 or 50 leads at a time.

THIS WAS a PURE numbers game.

I knew if I made a 100 calls per week. A 100 attempts at reaching people… I knew I would set 7-8 appointments per week.

Out of those 7-8 appointments I might actually only see 4-5 because of cancellations and reschedules.

Out of those 4 or 5 I would write on average 5 policies… (One household I might write 2 or 3 policies)

If the average premium was $2000, I made 80-90% up front commissions…

So I could make 8-9000 per month… Now some of that would go towards paying for the leads. Leads cost $14 a piece.

PURE NUMBERS…

As long as I repeated that process every week, my paychecks remained level. Some months I would or could do even better.

Adwords in my mind is no different. It’s all based on time and energy and activity to achieve a result.

Continue the process and you will break through and get a big winner periodically.

But the secret is, even when you have an unbelievable month or you are making more money than you have in your life… the secret is to continue the process. Don’t get comfortable. Otherwise, you will certainly stagnate and wonder where your commissions went that you were making months ago.

Sorry so long everyone.

I can really feel all of your frustrations because I’ve been there. Now it’s not so bad because I have a stream of income and it lessons the blow etc…

You’ll get there to if you keep that “stick to it” attitude no matter what.

The best salesmen look at the process this way. They embrace and learn to love the “no’s”…. Because they know that each “no” means they are one step closer to the “yes”.

Each campaign that fails should make say, “YES! I’m one failure closer to a success!!”

The Power of The Referral!

Matt Levenhagen Blog Post (Reprinted with Permission):

All of you that are reading this are in different businesses or the same businesses with different approaches, products and spin…

I want this Blog to have something for everybody. One of the reasons I started this Blog is because it does categorize each post that I make. If you look to the right in that first column you will see categories forming…

This enables me to cover a lot of subjects and when someone new comes along they can just go to the topics that interest them…

I want to talk a minute about referrals. No matter what business you are in, referrals can be a HUGE income generator. In fact, some businesses end up ending their other advertising efforts because they can keep busy with referral biz.

Now of course affiliate marketing is something along these lines where other people online are referring business to your products and you are giving them a fee or commission for it…

BUT what I’m talking about is free, unsolicited referrals that you get JUST because someone feels confident in your product or services… OR they think it will help someone… or they like you!

I come from an insurance background. I’ve sold all products from personal to business, but for a while I sold a lot of life insurance. In that business referrals are not only easy to get, but they can bring the cost of buying leads and advertising way down. You don’t need as much.

It wasn’t real hard to ask for a referral. Why? Because you ask for it after you have already provided a great product or service to the person you’re asking! That person is happy or satisfied that you took good care of them.

We would even go as far… because we were in the person’s home so this was easier… to pull out a notepad or a pre-made referral sheet and ask if they had a family member or friends that needed Life insurance (or whatever we were selling)…

OR some would even be as bold as… and this is a great technique, btw… to ask if the person had an address book so that they could put your number in there if they needed you again… and while the address book was out, guess what? You ask for referrals. The numbers and names are right there!
Just Ask!

A referral is sweet because there are no advertising costs. And the sale is much easier because you have an element of trust coming into the sales environment. It’s often good for the salesman as well because you know that this person won’t pull something on you because they know it could reflect back on the person that referred!

I also run my own contracting business. I got heavy into remodeling for a while, but now I paired down my business from several crews to just me and some sub-contractors if I need them… A little remodeling, painting, repair, carpentry, windows, doors and more!

Lately, I have been getting HUGE referrals. AND in some cases repeat business or business from people that just know me and know I do good work.

Several months ago I decided to pump a little money into advertising to get the season rolling… I spent about $175 per month on advertising in our local newspaper in a special section for business’s and services.

I’ve always had a lot of luck with this paper in the past and this time was no different. It’s got a big circulation. I live on the border of the City of Milwaukee… so millions of people.

BUT! I have to stop the ad I think… in fact, it is now!… I’m actually debating… I may just change it to go after larger jobs to schedule later in the year…

The reason I need to do this is because I have 3 large jobs lined up that are ALL referral. Not even from the ad… 2 people that I know (friends) and another person (who I guess is a friend also now since I’ve known him for a few years…) who I had built and addition for a few years ago and have done other projects for… NOW has a big store front for me to gut and remodel!

BIG project… City of Milwaukee’s getting involved… He’s working on getting grants… It took $0 for me to get the job… To be honest, I haven’t even bid the job yet. It’s a done deal and he doesn’t even know what I’m going to charge him…

Have I done a good job for him in the past do you think? Do you think he trusts me?

If you open your local paper and look at all the contractors in there, that is just a sampling… Many contractors live by referral alone and don’t need to advertise. I know an Uncle of mine is like a year deep in projects as a carpenter!

So the same goes for the online business… If you have a good product or service people will freely send people to you or use your service themselves! They will simply recommend you… I do it all the time. If I see someone that has a good product or service, I’ll provide links without even worrying if I’m getting compensated!

BUT! In order for YOU to get referrals several factors have to be present. People must like you. You can’t have a bad attitude or manners and expect people to give a hoot about your biz…. You must have a good product or service…. AND you must provide good support!

Professionalism and Attitude will win people over… In fact, sometimes people will buy from you, even though your product is a little more than the next guy, because they LIKE you.

So referrals are powerful and can have a huge impact on your income.

Think about it!

Hang in there… It’s a number game!

Matt Levenhagen Blog Post (Reprinted with Permission):

This is something I posted on the Warriors Forum after having a small, short drought. I hadn’t made a sale for a longer than average period. I finally made one this day and had to communicate how I felt to someone. It sort of developed into more than that…

QUOTING MYSELF:

I just want to say, I love this internet stuff!!

To all the newbies out there that are just getting started with their online businesses and haven’t seen the first sale yet or anyone that’s having a streak of bad luck… I just wanted to take the time to tell you to HANG IN THERE.

There is nothing better than being in business for yourself. I’ve been my own boss for years. I own my own insurance agency; I had a remodeling business a few years ago… I’m so conditioned to working on my own that I think it would drive me crazy if I had to punch a clock again. Getting up without an alarm clock every day is so nice.

It is so exciting when someone actually spends money on one of your products. You’ve worked so hard on your website or choosing the perfect affiliate programs that are going to offer the best products at the highest commission. It’s great when you see that hard work pay off.

My main product is affiliate programs. I’ve been doing PPC for a long time, but once in a while I fall into a rut like I have been the last week or two. It’s a little worry some, but I keep doing the things that I’ve always done.

I keep my eye on the ball and don’t let up.

I stick to my routine. I work on my site, I write my articles, I fine tune my PPC campaigns and add new ones, I study SEO, I learn from e-Books and Forums about the online business, and just systematically work the plan… yes, I do have a plan.

I’ve been a salesman for a long time. I’ve been an insurance agent since 1997. There is one thing I’ve learned from my sales experience that can be translated to online world:

Numbers.

Numbers. It’s all about numbers. I sell life insurance. I work with a couple different brokerages and can literally quote 100s of companies for any one person in minutes. I use various lead systems to find prospects.

About 2 years ago I hooked up with a lead program to sell “Mortgage Life Insurance” This one company really had an incredible system that really drove home the importance of knowing your numbers…

Here were my numbers selling Mortgage Products: If I got 10 leads per week, made 75 phone calls, I would set 5-7 appointments, and make 2-3 sales… Consistently. It’s a numbers game. It never failed. If I was making $5000 per month I could double that just by doubling the leads and the phone calls… of course it probably helps to be a good salesman also.

MY POINT: It’s the same way with online business. If you see X number of people, you will make X number of sales.

This is why I don’t worry. I can predict when I am due. I know my numbers. (i.e., I’ve had 300 clicks without a sale, I normally get one sale every 200 clicks… I’m due!!)… Maybe that’s why I like PPC, it’s a numbers game.

I’m certainly not making 1 million dollars a year online (yet). But I know it’s just a matter of time. More traffic = More sales

If I consistently work my plan and stick to my routine I will realize success… actually a nice 6 figure income would be sufficient.

And so can all of you! It may not happen overnight, but it will happen if you’re persistent.

I could write an eBook, but I just wanted to take a few minutes and communicate my experience…

I’m off a fresh sell after a short drought and still have the residual adrenaline effects running through my body. So please forgive me.

Stick with it everyone and I’ll see ya’ll at the top!!

END QUOTE

Sometimes I get in the zone and right something profound…
