I’ve previously shown marketers using shady tactics to bust the Adwords quality score algorithm. And today I’ve come across another Adwords quality score busting technique that some of the “less than ethical” marketers are now using. You can see how they are now busting the quality score with a “yard sale site”!
Shady Sites Busting Adwords Quality Score By Hijacking Reputable Domains…
You may remember that one of the shadier tactics used in the past to bust the Adwords quality score had to do with marketers using the domains of legitimate and established sites to get their adwords ad approved. Then after a good quality score has been established they start rotating the destination urls. So that adwords quality score busting tactic went something like this:
- Put Adwords ad in with a legitimate display/destination url.
- Run the ad long enough to get a good quality score.
- Once the quality score is established start rotating the destination url between the legitimate site and the questionable site.
It’s possible that the shady marketers are using an “ad tracking system” to redirect the destination url. In other words, they could redirect the legitimate URL from the ad tracking system URL and then at some point down the road simply switch out the legitimate site for the shady site within the ad tracking system. I believe that was a technique that John Barker from Adwords BlackBook used to teach – although I don’t recall him ever proposing that marketers hijack someone ELSES URL.
You can see the results of that Adwords quality score busting technique below:
Of course what’s amazing about that particular video is the fact that it is promoting the News Daily 7 fake news site – probably one of the least quality sites ever to “grace” the internet.
Shady Site Busting Adwords Quality Score AND Running Multiple Adwords Accounts…
News Daily 7 doesn’t seem to be advertising on Adwords anymore, but when they were they not only busted the quality score, but even were running MULTIPLE adwords accounts as you can see in the video below:
So while some sites are warning people of certain tactics that could get their Adwords account banned, some are trying to figure out what the Adwords rules actually are, and others are taking a more pragmatic approach to the Adwords ban, the shadier sites are constantly working systems to bust the Google Adwords Quality score algorithm and continue to reap the rewards.
Doing Adwords The Right Way
I got my own Adwords account banned about a year ago – but deservedly so. I was just uploading random keywords and URLs and not paying attention to the quality score at all. In other words my advertisements and landing pages didn’t really have much to do with the landing pages I was promoting. So in my case I can’t really blame them.
I recently talked to Michael Brown, creator of the Niche Blitzkrieg about his difficulties getting a particular Adwords ad approved within the affiliate training arena. Although it was difficult, Adwords actually did give him quite a bit of feedback to help him get his ad approved in the long run. And if you look at the Adwords landing page Michael Brown ultimately agreed on you can get a sense of what Adwords was looking for. Especially note the wording of the large disclaimer at the very TOP of the landing page.
No doubt many advertisers will continue to be sick of the Google Adwords quality score, but for those who work hard to master the ropes and figure out what Google wants, they can get a distinct edge on their competition…
…at least for a while until Google changes the rules again and bans their account.
